October Meeting – Congressmen McCaul & Poe

We’re honored to have two of our Texas congressmen, Michael McCaul (TX-10) and Ted Poe (TX-2) as speakers for our October meeting.

Congressman Michael McCaulChairman McCaul will discuss the most dangerous and unexpected threats to our national security – and the call for needed serious actions to protect us.   Rep. McCaul became Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security in January 2013, and has oversight of the Department of Homeland Security ensuring it is able to carry out its core mission of protecting the American people from terrorist attacks.  As Chairman, he has prioritized the threat of international and domestic terrorism, border security, cyber security, airport security and fixing dysfunctional management within DHS.

Now in Failure of Imagination:  The Deadliest Threats to Our Homeland – and How to Thwart Them, the sitting chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, who receives daily intelligence about threats materializing against America, depicts in real time the hazards that are closer than we realize.  In this compelling and action-packed narrative, Chairman McCaul outlines realistic scenarios that could inflict more damage on the nation than any attack we’ve yet faced.  He then explains how our vulnerabilities were created, why our enemies are actively contemplating them and what we can do to solve them before it’s too late.  Blue Willow Bookshop will have this book for sale at our luncheon.

Congressman Ted PoeCongressman Poe is a strong advocate for lower taxes, free markets, a limited, accountable government, and individual liberty.  He serves on the House Committee of the Judiciary and House Committee of Foreign Affairs.  He also serves as the Chairman of the Terrorism Subcommittee.

Poe came to Congress after spending 30 years in the Harris County Courthouse, first as a prosecutor and then as a criminal court judge.  As Judge, Poe garnered national medial attention for his creative sentences dubbed “Poetic Justice.”  Poe’s common sense and nonsense approach to law has helped him to be a successful advocate for his district.

This year, Poe is 1 of only 34 Members of Congress in both the House and Senate to have legislation signed into law.  In September 8, 2016, Congressman Poe returned to Congress to continue fighting for Texans after spending 8 weeks in MD Anderson Hospital fighting Leukemia.  Congressman Poe has been overwhelmed with support and prayers and is thankful for his progress.
